From Hobby to Passion

The Crochet Journey of Harmony’s Crochet

Crocheting is more than just a craft; for some, it’s a passion, a form of expression, and even a business. Harmony, the talented artist behind Harmony’s Crochet, has woven her love for crochet into a growing small business. She is also an attending Artisan at the upcoming Words and Wonders 2025 event. In this exclusive interview, she shares her journey, inspirations, challenges, and dreams for the future.

The Beginning of a Creative Journey

Harmony's journey into the world of crochet began in a simple yet inspiring way. "I first got into crocheting when I picked up a small 'How to Crochet' book at my local Walmart store," she recalls. Having always admired the craft, she decided to take the leap and teach herself. While the learning process had its challenges, it was the joy of completing projects—no matter how imperfect—that kept her going.

Since starting in January 2023, Harmony's crochet style has evolved significantly. "The more I crochet, the more I want to learn new techniques," she explains. Her biggest inspiration? Her Nanny, who was skilled in both sewing and crochet, and whose wisdom and talent left a lasting impression.

Balancing Passion and Responsibility

Though crochet is Harmony’s passion, she also balances a full-time night shift job. Finding time for crochet means making the most of every free moment—during lunch breaks and in the evenings after work. Despite the demanding schedule, she remains dedicated to her craft, always eager to improve and expand her skills.

Creative Process and Favorite Creations

For inspiration, Harmony looks to other crochet artists on social media and listens to suggestions from her customers at markets. "The feedback from my peers and customers helps me understand what people are interested in buying," she says.

Her favorite items to crochet? Plushies. "But I also enjoy making clothing, blankets, and home decor items," she adds. Some of her favorite yarns to work with include Parfait Chunky, Bernat Blanket, and Joann’s Big Twist. Among her most challenging projects was the intricate Six-Day Star Blanket pattern by Betty McKnit. "It took many trials and errors, but I finally got it down!" she shares proudly.

The Business of Crochet

Harmony’s Crochet business started organically. "When I began posting my finished projects on Facebook, people started asking if I could make items for them," she recalls. This demand led her to start taking commissions, and eventually, she began selling at local markets, where the enthusiastic reactions of customers confirmed her passion for the craft.

For Harmony, the most rewarding part of her business is seeing the joy her creations bring to people. "I work hard to make unique pieces that aren’t often seen elsewhere," she explains. While pricing and marketing can be challenging, she strives to keep her items affordable while ensuring fair compensation for her work.

Overcoming Challenges and Staying Motivated

Time management is one of the biggest hurdles for Harmony as she balances her business with her job and personal life. However, she remains determined. "One of my biggest pieces of advice is to never give up. If something doesn’t turn out the way you imagined, try again!" she encourages aspiring crocheters.

When faced with creative blocks, she turns to YouTube market videos for inspiration or takes a step back to make fun projects. "Writing down ideas or drawing inspiration from others really helps," she says. The most valuable lesson she’s learned? "You won’t get a million orders overnight. Building a platform and getting sales takes patience."

Looking Ahead: Dreams and Future Plans

As Harmony continues to grow her business, she has exciting plans ahead. "I have many markets coming up, including Words & Wonders 2025 in Seymour, Indiana, and the Commiskey Fall Festival in September," she shares. Her ultimate goal? To build a strong enough following that she can transition to part-time work and focus more on her crochet business.

For those looking to explore her creations, Harmony’s Crochet is active on Facebook, TikTok, and Instagram. She also welcomes custom orders via social media or email at harmonys.crxchet@gmail.com.

As she continues her crochet journey, Harmony remains passionate and committed to sharing her love for the craft with the world. "Crochet is my passion, and I’m excited to keep growing and creating!"
